A guy came into the store today (see what we mean.) He said, "We're having salmon and quail for dinner, tonight. What kind of wine should I serve?" Duke's staff, in unison, "PINOT NOIR!" He said, "For six people." Duke's staff, still in unison, "A MAGNUM of Pinot Noir!" Our customer ended up buying a magnum of 1997 ICI/LABAS American Pinot Noir, La Detente. After he left, we decided that this is a secret too good to keep for just our walk-in customers. Jim Clendenen is the owner and winemaker of ICI/LABAS as well as having those same titles at Au Bon Climat, a label with which you may be more familiar. He experimented with blending Pinot Noir from Oregon with Pinot Noir grown here in California. (Hence the need to call it "American.") This little experiment produced a wine with the best of both worlds - good acid and structure from the cool climate grapes and that wonderful fruit and spiciness that comes through in California Pinot Noirs. Add in the nuances from aging in ideal conditions (at the winery) and you end up with a dynamite wine. We have convinced Jim to allow us to sell magnums of this unique wine from his library at just $39.99 each (list price $60.00). Quantities are severely limited so you need to call soonest to get one.
