PALMAZThe Duke is known for finding the newest and fastest-rising stars on the wine scene. His current find is Palmaz Vineyards owned by Amalia and Julio Palmaz. In the medical world, Dr. Julio Palmaz is well-known as the inventor of the stent ( a device used in angioplasty to enlarge and stablize the lumen in coronary arteries).
In 1997, Amalia and Julio purchased a forgotten winery once owned by Henry Hagen, one of Napa Valley's pioneer winemakers. They patiently and lovingly have been refurbishing the vineyards and winery and are now making top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon from the grapes grown on their property. The winery is as fascinating as it is beautiful. It is built into the side of the hill and is equivalent to an 18 story building underground. This allows the entire winemaking process to be gravity-fed; the wine is never touched by a pump. Winemaker Randy Dunn has been an integral part of the entire process, from replanting the vineyards to choosing the cooperage to actually making the wine.
The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon from Palmaz Vineyards has a deep, complex aroma of dark fruit, toasty oak and exotic spices with generous amounts of supple, approachable tannins. The flavors integrate smoothly from attack to finish, promising great aging potential and development this decade and beyond.

The Hyde family owns the famed vineyard of the same name. The de Villaines own one of the most prestigous wineries in the world, Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. The families, joined by marriage, share long histories in French and Californian winemaking.
2002 Chardonnay
The Duke was pleased and honored to introduce the 2000 vintage of HdV Chardonnay to our loyal customers in December of 2002. We told you then that Ron Wiegand, noted wine consultant to the restaurant industry and the only American who is both a Master of Wine and a Master Sommelier, has said that the 2000 HdV Chardonnay was the finest California Chardonnay he has ever tasted.
We have just received a supply of the HdV 2002 Chardonnay and, if anything, the 2002 vintage is even better than the initial effort. The collaboration of French winemaking expertise and Carneros fruit from the Hyde Vineyard has produced an exceptional wine. You will find in this 2002 Chardonnay the delicate aromas and flavor of white peach combined with spice and floral honey. In the mouth, finesse and purity are sustained by a firm acid structure. The winemaker characterizes it as a "wine of gentle intensity."
