Warning - Great Wine Seminar Ahead

The Duke is pleased to announce the Central Coast Wineries Special 2001 Futures Seminar. The date is Thursday, March 20, the time is 7:00PM and the location is the Warner Center Marriott Hotel. Reservations are required.

Many of the wines are the same ones featured in our e-mail offering from last week. Follow this link to see details of the offering: Central Coast Futures Offering.

Our special guests are Jim Clendenen (Au Bon Climat and Vita Nova), Bob Lindquist (Qupe), Gray Hartley (Hitching Post) and Jim Adelman (Makor). We are planning to serve barrel samples or very recently bottled wines from the 2001 vintage. Jim Clendenen has proclaimed this vintage to be the "greatest in the history of the winery". The tasting wine selections are too numerous to list here, but you can follow this link to see a list of the wines as well as other details of the event: http://www.dukeofbourbon.com/030211.html.

We will depart from our usual format somewhat. The first part of the evening will be a walk-about tasting to give you the opportunity to sample some of the wines and speak directly to the individual responsible for producing it. We will finish up in our usual sit-down mode.

You've heard the good news and now the better news. The wines being tasted will be offered to you on a futures basis at up to 20% savings over release prices. Here is a great opportunity to "buy on your palate" at a substantial savings.

This is a "don't miss" event, so mark your calendar and call us soon to reserve your spot.
You can reach the Duke of Bourbon at 818-341-1234 or outside California at 1-800-4-FINE-WINE.

Anticipated release - September 2004

Here is what some others have to say about Chateau Montelena and the 2001 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon:

Robert M. Parker, Jr., of The Wine Advocate: "Extraordinary. The greatness of this vintage is obvious in its ripe, explosive aromas of crème de cassis, licorice, minerals, leather and earth. This super-concentrated blockbuster possesses a sumptuous, multilayered palate feel, great purity, high levels of glycerin and alcohol, and sweet tannin. For my taste, this is the finest Cabernet Montelena has produced since 1997." (94-96 points)

Kiplinger's Personal Financial Magazine opines: 'We're suggesting that you use a futures contract to purchase a case of one of America's best Cabernet Sauvignons for less than it will fetch upon its release. The wine in question is Chateau Montelena, one of Napa Valley's most consistent wineries."

The Robb Report sees things in a similar light: 'In California, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignons continue to capture the limelight. Unfortunately, you will not be able to purchase any of the serious Cabernets before 2004. That is, with the exception of Chateau Montelena, whose 2001 Cabernet futures are scheduled for release in March.'

Make sure you get your share of one of the planet's premiere Cabernet Sauvignons by calling us today at 818-341-1234 or outside California at 1-800-4-FINE-WINE.

Long Vineyards 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Pre-Sell

The lucky members of our Wine Association and their guests who attended the latest dinner at Posto Ristorante in January were able to taste the incredible Long Vineyards 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon as a barrel sample with their main course. We were pleased to offer the wine on as a "future" to those in attendance that evening. We are just as pleased to offer it to you today on a pre-sell basis.

The grapes come from Bob's property located on Pritchard Hill just east of St. Helena next to Chappellet, Bryant Family and the new Colgin Vineyard. If you believe in guilt by association, then his vineyard is guilty of producing some of the most outstanding fruit in Napa Valley. The wine showed exceptionally well at the dinner: the nose was full of luscious fruit; the wine itself had solid structure, but still had a supple mouth-feel; the finish was long and strong - just the qualities you have come to associate with a wine produced by Bob Long.

If you recall, The New York Times web page called the Long Vineyards 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon the "wine of the vintage in Napa Valley." The 2000 vintage only adds to that legend.

Exciting Private Cellar Wines Available at the Duke

We are delighted to be able to make available to you an exciting selection of high-end wines from private cellars including some properly aged white wines at very fair prices. You can be confident of the cellaring, since, as usual, we know the original collectors well.

Just a couple of quick notes about the Grace Family Vineyard bottlings.
1.Should you decide to purchase all four of the magnums, we will discount the total price an additional 10%.
2.The 1981 and 1982 vintages were produced at the Caymus facility, since the Grace Family Winery had not been constructed yet.
3.The 1990 vintage was probably the most sought-after of any of the Grace wines due to the strength of the vintage, the outstanding reviews the wine received and the very limited availability of the wine. A true classic and a must for any Grace collector.

Silver Oak, Napa, Has Arrived
Hello from the Duke of Bourbon

The first of February is always an exciting time here at the Duke. No, we are not talking about Groundhog Day. We are talking February 1, the traditional release date of the Napa Valley offering from Silver Oak Vineyards. We wait for that day the way a first-grader waits for Christmas - it can't get here fast enough. (Notice how we have jumped the gun by one day.) So here on the eve of the big day, we are pleased and excited to announce:

Silver Oak Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley

Bottle Price $99.50, 6 or more: $95.00

Duke Tasting notes: "A classic Silver Oak from the Napa Valley. Very appealing and approachable even in its youth, yet it has the 'stuffing' to make it age well. It seems to be a bit fuller than the 1997 vintage. There is a terrific balance between the fruit and the American oak traditionally used by Silver Oak. The wine shows all of the greatness for which Silver Oak is known. Don't miss this beauty." We have other wonderful Silver Oak wines available here at the Duke. We specialize in grand format bottlings so we have those available as well.

1999 Dunn, Howell Mtn . . . The Best in Several Years

Down from the mountain to the Duke of Bourbon!

Randy Dunn has just released his wonderful 1999 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain. (WS 93)

Randy, profiled as a Napa Valley maverick in the July 31, 2002 issue of the Wine Spectator, and the man who put Howell Mountain on the map as an appellation that produces big blockbuster wines, has given us another stunning example of his classic. The winery considers the 1999 Howell Mountain to be "the best in several years."

The 1999 Dunn Howell Mountain is powerful, concentrated and complex. Packed with rich fruit and the proper balance of oak and tannin, this is a wine that will age for years.

"May be the Le Pin of Napa Valley" - Robert Parker

Hello from the Duke of Bourbon

The DukeThe Duke has found another "big-time winner" Hundred Acre Cabernet Sauvignon! We are happy to be involved in the inaugural vintage of this top-notch, new winery. Hundred Acre will be another entry into the Napa cult winery category.

We recently tasted this gem with winery and vineyard owner Jayson Woodbridge. All we could say was, "WOW!!" The intensity of the wine certainly belies the whimsical name of the winery.

Here are a few facts about Hundred Acre:
  • The winemaker: Philippe Melka has worked at both Petrus and Chateau Haut-Brion. He is also the winemaker for Vineyard 29 and was just named winemaker for Bryant Family Vineyards.

  • The grapes for Hundred Acre wine come from a single vineyard located just north of St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain. It is farmed by Jim Barbour, who has farmed some of the finest vineyards in Napa Valley for over 25 years. He has teamed with Heidi Barrett on several projects, including Screaming Eagle and Grace Family Vineyards. The farming practices are meticulous and the yields are only about 1.4 tons per acre.
  • Robert Parker has reviewed both the initial 2000 vintage (in bottle) and the 2001 vintage (in barrel):
"These are the first two vintages produced at this tightly spaced vineyard on the Silverado Trail, north of St. Helena, near the Rombauer Vineyard. Both are impressive efforts fashioned by Philippe Melka, who believes this site has unlimited potential. There will be approximately 1,000 cases of the 2000 (the first crop harvested). An incredibly sexy, opulent, 'pedal to the metal' Cabernet, its dense purple color is followed by unfettered, pure crème de cassis and cherry jam aromas. Somehow, its 100% new oak aging has been totally absorbed by the wine's richness. Supple-textured and voluptuous, it is a glorious Cabernet Sauvignon fruit bomb with abundant underlying tannin and structure. This lush, hedonistic 2000 will drink well for 10-15 years."
Looking ahead, Parker has said that Hundred Acre "may be the Le Pin of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon."

Extra Touches:
  1. The packaging is stunning.
  2. The 23K gold ring on the neck of the bottle signifies Hundred Acre's bond of quality and their vow to never compromise in the making of their incredible wine.
  3. The 23K gold ring on the neck of the bottle signifies Hundred Acre's bond of quality and their vow to never compromise in the making of their incredible wine.
  4. The wooden 3-packs are hand-made, tongue-and-groove "fortresses" fastened with furniture quality screws.
  5. Each pack contains a specially made French SK screwdriver to cope with opening the "fortress."
  6. The top of the wooden box is wood-burned and the label on the bottle is embossed with the opening lines of Homer's Odyssey, signifying triumph over adversity.
  7. No detail has been overlooked in either the growing of the grapes, the making of the wine or the packaging itself.
The price for the inaugural 2000 vintage is $150.00 per bottle, $450.00 for the custom-made wooden 3-pack or $375.00 for the etched magnum, also in a custom-made wooden box. Quantities are limited.

50% Discount on Long Produced Chardonnay

Hello from the Duke of Bourbon

The Duke continues to search for those fantastic wine offers for which we have become so well known.

This time we have uncovered a sensational Chardonnay made by Bob Long and Sandi Belcher of Long Vineyards. The source of the fruit is Melanson Vineyard on Pritchard Hill in the Napa Valley. The vineyard is contiguous to Long's estate and was planted 35 years ago by Bob Long, Sr.

Long Vineyards is famous for crafting wonderful wines that are built to take some aging. So it is with this 1998 vintage Chardonnay. Rich, round and full-bodied with a bit of oak, this wine will definitely please your palate and the price will please the accountant in your house.

The wine has a list price of $24.00 per bottle. However, as a favor to us, Bob Long has made it possible for us to be able to sell it at a discount of 50% - $12.00 per bottle. The smile already on your accountant's face will broaden when you find out you will only pay $132.00 for a case...we did the math here at the Duke...that works out to 50% off plus an additional $1 off per bottle if you buy a case. There are only 35 cases left so you need to call us right away. Our number is 818-341-1234 in California or 1-800-4 FINE WINE from outside the State.

DRC Meets California!

Hello from the Duke of Bourbon. Wow, do we have something exciting for this Virtual Vine-Line news item!

Most of us have heard of the giant from Burgundy, Domaine de la Romanèe-Conti (DRC). Simply put, DRC makes one of the most expensive and sought-after wines in the world.

Many of you have also heard of the Hyde Vineyard in the famed Carneros appellation in Napa Valley. This 130-acre property furnishes grapes for some of the most highly respected wines produced in California, including Paul Hobbs, Patz and Hall, Kistler and Ramey.

Aubert de Villaine is a proprietor and director of DRC and one of the most preeminent individuals in all of Burgundy. He was traveling in California many, many years ago when he met and eventually married Pamela Fairbanks, a cousin of the Hyde Family. This connection has lead to the current collaboration between Larry Hyde and Aubert de Villaine? HdV.

The synergy between exceptional California vineyards and the very best of France's winemaking traditions, along with the efforts of winemaker Jean-Laurent Vacheron, has created two incredibly deep, complex and elegant wines.

HdV 2000 Chardonnay

This wine was made from clones selected by Larry Hyde. The vineyard was managed to provide a very small yield. The nose has hints of floral honey and peaches while the distinctive minerality of the Hyde property comes through on the palate. The low yield and the customary Carneros winds have produced a well-structured wine with a long finish that concentrates in floral scents, spice, honey and just the right amount of oak.

Ron Wiegand, noted wine consultant to the restaurant industry and the only American who is both a Master of Wine and a Master Sommelier, has said that the 2000 HdV Chardonnay was the finest California Chardonnay he has ever tasted.

HdV 2000 Red (a proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot)

This wine was also produced from very low-yielding vines that were subjected to extensive canopy management to promote even ripening of the crop. The result is a bold, dark red color with great structure and concentrated aromas and a complex bouquet. Red and black berries in the front of the mouth give way to the presence of Cabernet and evolve toward leather, cedar and dark chocolate.

James Laube of the Wine Spectator writes:

Both the HdV 2000 Chardonnay and the 2000 Merlot are sumptuous wines, impeccably balanced, with rich, polished flavors and a sense of grace and finesse. They are classy and understated, almost more French in their refinement and texture than classically Californian.

We have a very limited amount of these wines available for sale. The HdV 2000 Chardonnay is available for $50 per bottle and the HdV 2000 Red for $75. Please call us at the store for more details. You can reach us at 818-341-1234 or at 1-800-4 FINE WINE if you are outside the State.

Introducing Amuse Bouche from Winemaker Heidi Barrett!

Cheers from the Duke of Bourbon!
Show of hands?
How many of you have heard of the giants of Pomerol, Petrus and Chateau Le Pin? Hmmmm,
We see a host of virtual hands in the air.

How many of you have heard of Heidi Barrett, the preeminent winemaker at Screaming Eagle and La Sirena?
Still a lot of virtual hands showing.

Heidi has long had the vision of creating a Pomerol-style Merlot/Cabernet Franc blend from the best sources of Napa Valley fruit. That dream is becoming a reality with the introduction of Amuse Bouche. The Merlot grapes from her own 3-acre block were harvested in September in optimum condition. According to Heidi, the young wine is showing remarkable structure and suppleness as it begins its life journey. It transcends the varietal and promises to be intense, concentrated and complex. The Cabernet Franc grapes from 20-year-old hillside vines near Oakville were harvested in early October. Together, they are being aged in a variety of French oak cooperage. This truly will be a wine to rival its famous counterparts from across the Atlantic.

We have arranged to obtain a limited amount of 2002 Amuse Bouche (total production is less than 250 cases) and are offering it to our preferred customers on a futures basis for $250.00 per bottle. Your 100% deposit will secure delivery of the wine in August, 2004. There is a 2-bottle limit on all orders.

Act now to insure that you will have the initial vintage of what is sure to be a legendary wine.

To place your order, please stop by the store or call us at 818-341-1234 or, if you are outside California, at 1-800-4-FINE-WINE.

January 1 - The New Vintage of Paraduxx!

The New Year is here and so is the new vintage of Paraduxx! And the fantastic news is that the 1999 vintage of Duckhorn Vineyard's uncommon blend of Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon was named the second best blended red wine in America by The Wine News, besting such worthy competition as Joseph Phelps Insignia, Opus One and Dominus. To quote from their review: "Heady, layered aromas of raspberry, red cherry, plum, vanilla, mocha and slightly charred oak. Rich and full-bodied with medium full tannins, this robust, yet voluptuous wine delivers extracted flavors that replicate the nose, enhanced by notes of crème brûlée and clove. Thoroughly distinctive."

The Paraduxx Story

In early 1994, Dan Duckhorn enjoyed a wonderful bottle of Tignanello, an Italian Super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Dan appreciated the wine so much he experienced an epiphany. Instead of blending Sangiovese (Tuscany's native grape) with Bordeaux varietals, like the Super Tuscans, we could blend Zinfandel (California's native grape) with Bordeaux varietals, creating a wine that borrows from the old world but has a new world twist - a wine that would be a paradox.

One of our greatest challenges was determining what the wine should taste like. Producers of Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfandel have hundreds of wines to use as reference points, but with the unique concept of blending Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon we were entering uncharted waters. Paraduxx, as we now know it, was developed through trial and error. We experimented with different percentages of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to achieve our current evolution. To date we have released five vintages and we have two more resting in barrel. We feel comfortable that future blends will be around 65% Zinfandel and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, with some vintages containing a portion of Merlot or other varietals.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of Paraduxx for our winemaking team is that there are no set parameters; our goal is to produce the best possible wine every year. Paraduxx is not handcuffed by being labeled as one variety, allowing us to add more Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfandel to create the best blend from each vintage. This extraordinary freedom makes Paraduxx truly special within the Duckhorn Wine Company portfolio.

The Future of Paraduxx

As we move forward our goal is to label Paraduxx as Estate Grown, with the blend consisting of grapes that come exclusively from our own vineyards. One of the greatest challenges we have faced with this wine has been the scarcity of premium Napa Valley Zinfandel available for purchase. We have planted several acres of Zinfandel alongside the existing Cabernet and Merlot plantings on our Napa Valley Estate Vineyards in order to guarantee our sources. We hope that as these vines mature we will be able to produce more Paraduxx. We also have plans to build a state of the art winery at our Rector Creek property in Yountville that will allow Paraduxx to have a home of its own. Ground breaking is slated for spring of 2003, and if all goes well construction will be completed in the winter of 2004.

The Paraduxx Label

Being a unique wine, Paraduxx needed a unique package, a package that would set it apart from our Duckhorn Vineyards wines. Dan Duckhorn has always been a waterfowl art enthusiast, and he saw the Paraduxx label as a medium for bringing together his two passions of art and wine. We started with the concept of two ducks (a Paraduxx, of course) and then let the artist's creative juices flow. Each year's label showcases a different artist's signature medium and style as they interpret a pair of ducks native to the Pacific Flyway. The artwork from each vintage is also available in a limited edition of signed and numbered prints sold exclusively at the winery.

The Duke has quacked up and will receive our share of the 2000 Paraduxx on January 2, 2003. The wine is carefully allocated and we must limit each individual to two 6-packs. Call now to order your allotment at $43.00 per bottle or $255.00 per 6-pack. You can reach us at 818-341-1234 in California and 1-800-4-FINE-WINE from outside the state.
