Back in 1980 artist Richard Taylor had an idea to change the look of an aquarium by lowering the water and adding a work of art. Since then many of these low-maintenance aquariums have been built and displayed world wide in Museums, Aquariums, Restaurants, Offices and Private Residences. These aquariums have changed the way people look at aquariums by incorporating the below-water life of colorful freshwater fish with above-water vignettes of pier-side life.

Components for these aquariums are made from materials that can withstand a moist environment. The figures are sculpted in plastic and non-ferrous metals: the piers are made in redwood: pilings are dowels encased in Plexiglas tubes to discourage algae. All piers have replaceable miniature lights which add a great dimension at night time. To encourage real weathering, all fasteners are made in brass and other metals. "It is like the piers are actually alive" states the artist. He continues, "The piers just continue to get better! On some of the buildings I had placed small steel nails to attach the roofs and the redwood decks. After several years soft miniature rust streaks appeared (just as they do in real life!). I was completely amazed that the idea of ageing of materials could also be duplicated in miniature!"

To eliminate the unsightly line that develops as water evaporates, we designed an automatic float mechanism which allow the reservoir (below the cabinet) to refill automatically when the water level drops as little as 1/16 on an inch. To reduce responsibilities even more, all of our aquariums come with an automatic fish feeder.

Most Aquariums are Custom Built or commissioned from a clients specific idea. For The Museum of Miniatures we created a pier with a working Ferris Wheel. Other clients have requested Oil Docks, Restaurant replicas which are located on a pier, Shipping fleet boat replicas, Old Railroad Piers, Piers with Merry-Go Rounds, Tropical military docks and aquariums created from photos of old piers that no longer exist.
