"Grill Iron" Meets Grid Iron
For Football Feasts
Two American institutions prepared for kick-of back in 1869: Intercollegiate football and H.J. Heinz Company. While Princeton and Rutgers battled for the first touchdown, Henry J. Heinz was loading his hitch wagon with the first Heinz product, horseradish, for delivery to the nearest grocer.
Now 130 years later, the two entities have never been more robust. Football factors into more families' fall schedules than ever, from high school to college to Sunday NFL. And the only question heard more often than "Are you going to the game this weekend?" is probably "What's for dinner?"
After 130 years, who better to answer that question than Heinz, maker of, among other things, America's Favorite ketchup. Because mealtime and gametime are of equal importance from Labor Day through New Year's, Americans have long since combined them in a phenomenon known as "tailgating" the pre-game, half-time, post-game buffet often spread across one's rear bumper. A new booklet from Heinz offers a play-book of sorts for tailgate chefs; a starting lineup of scrumptious recipes; and tips for keeping food safe away from home.
The Heinz Hitch: The Ultimate Team Tailgate
For decades, Heinz has operated the "ultimate tailgate," the Heinz Hitch, a replica of the classic H.J. Heinz Company delivery wagons of yesteryear. Pulled by eight, matched black Percheron Horses, the Heinz Hitch leads parades and headlines fairs throughout North America. The logos of Heinz's global brands adorn the fiery-red wagon, including notably the Company's domestic affiliates: Heinz U.S.A., Heinz Frozen Foods and StarKist. Those companies have collaborated to pull together their first ever joint recipe booklet, "Heinz Hitch Tailgate Cookin'," in anticipation of the fall football season and the Heinz Hitch's appearance in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 2000.
To receive a free copy of the recipe booklet, tailgaters should send their name and address to: Heinz Hitch Tailgate Cookin C/O Direct Mail Service Inc., 930 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222-3785 or visit www.heinz.com.
