INTRODUCTIONS / GREETINGS
Interested in sharing the joys of pipe smoking and experiences through
Email correspondence. I enjoy all pipes but particulary 'Ashton'. I like
handblended tobacoos. Everything related to smoking is of interest. How
do you enjoy your pipe? What great stories go with your pipe smoking?

INTRODUCTIONS / GREETINGS
From Alberto Bonfiglioli
tid0826@comune.bologna.it
Welcome new friends. It is a great pleasure for me to write a little note
to this
new club, and to my friend Ray Bromley, who is a great promoter and smoker
of pipes, as is his father.
Well, I make pipes. Many clients visit my laboratory every day to buy my
own pipes or pipes made by other companies. Of course, they also come to
chat about pipes, tobacco, women, and sports, and to play cards in my back
shop.
The Bonfiglioli's Pipa (Pipe) Club has 66 members. We meet every month in
a
nice Restaurant (Il Cambio) near Bologna. Last Friday (20 Oct. 95), Bonfiglioli's
5
Throphy in the game of "Scopa" was won by member no.61, Mr. Pierin
Giuliano.
He received a Ser Jacopo pipe and The Trophy Cup. By the way, one of the
Members of the Bonfiglioli's Pipa Club is Doctor Carlo Lodi, who is also
President of the Italian Pipe Club.
While I was making some pipes the other day, I had an idea, "why don't
I make a
special pipe just for the members of new OoOPS group?" So, I have decied
to design
such a pipe, with a special OoOPS stamping. It is a "chubby" shape
(like number
041 in my catalog).
***Editor's note: details of the Bonfiglioli OoOPS pipe offering are posted
below,
in the "items for sale" section.
Viva la pipa e tutti i fumatori
Smoke well,
Alberto

Special OoOPS Pipe made especially for OoOPS members!! Stamped with
"OoOPS" (What could be classier?-ed.) The price for members of
the
new mail group will be $75 for the sandblast and $95 for the smooths.
P.S. About my pipes--I don't put fills in them. If any of my pipes contain
defects,
I stamp them with the words "second choice". If you ever find
one of my pipes
that you think has a fill, send it to me, and I will immediately ship one
back to you.
---Alberto the pipemaker from downtown Bologna, Italy
Editor's note about Alberto's offer:
I guess I should point out that neither I nor anyone I know (except Alberto)
gets
a "cut" if you buy an OoOPS pipe. I do think it is a neat idea,
and have ordered
one for my own collection. Think of the built-in excuse you have when you
spill
tobacco or ashes on someone's carpet with such a pipe!!!

Section 3.
The CHARRING LIGHT
A CALL FOR FLAMES
I know what you are thinking...
Here is a section called the Charring Light, and it is sort of near the
end of this newsletter thing instead of in the beginning. Well, it isn't
that way because I forgot how to smoke. When I was figuring out how to lay
out the newsletter, I figured I would give each section a name relating
to the actions one engages in when smoking a pipe. Actually, the work of
smoking a pipe is all at the beginning (and end, but I didn't think we would
want to read a section called "Dumping out the Ashes," or "Reaming
out the Bowl"). Thus, the charring light occurs after preparing the
pipe and tobacco, and so it is with the newsletter.
Besides, the main function of the newsletter is to facilitate communication
between members. Thus, I concluded that the requests and ads of members
should be the first actual section in the newsletter. Helpful information
for members should come next. Then, an earnest but frail attempt to engage
members in conversation (you are reading it) would be made, followed by
corrections and additions to the Member Directory. The last few sections
could be used to put in the kind of things that people with lots of time
on their hands might find interesting or amusing if they ever actually read
that far.
The purpose of this section of the newsletter is to get people on their
feet (mataphorically, of course, but feel free to actually stand if you
want). It is hoped that The CHARRING LIGHT will draw us into a civilized
debate concerning pipe related issues that might not come up in other places
or contexts. Giving one's own opinion on an issue and reading the conflicting
views of others may produce heat (flames, CHARRING, get it?) but it may
also produce enLIGHTenment.
So, here is my call to debate and discussion. I propose to present to the
Organization a topic for discussion each month in the Newsletter. The topic
will take the form of a Burning Question. I will then collect your responses
to theBurning Question and edit them together into an article resembling
a moderated discussion. You can ask that your contribution be anonymous
if you prefer. Then, all of us will be able to read the discussion, and
either become nobler and better pipe smokers or throw tobacco at our computer
screens in disgust and frustration, as we see fit.
Now, since this is our first Newsletter, I actually have three questions.
E-mail me with your responses to one, two or all of these Burning Questions
before the next Newsletter is produced (the last weekend of November). Remember
to make your answers as lucid and cogent as your pipe smoking heritage would
dictate.
BURNING QUESTION ONE: Do you favor any particular changes in the format
of the Newsletter?
BURNING QUESTION TWO:Do you like the idea of discussing these "burning
issues?"
BURNING QUESTION THREE: Does the grain pattern on a pipe really make any
difference in the flavor, heat, moisture, or the way the pipe smokes? For
example, does a straight grain actually taste or smoke different from a
bird's-eye?
Any and all suggestions for pipe-smoking related questions you would like
to discuss in this forum are welcome.

Erbauliche Gedanken eines Tobackrauchers
Constructive thoughts of a Tobacco smoker
author unknown
So oft ich meine Tobackspfeiffe, As soon as I take my pipe,
Mit gutem Knaster angefuellt filled with good tobacco
Zur Lust und Zeitvertreib ergreife, for my pleasure and pastime
So gibt sie mir een Trauerbild. it gives me a sad view
Und Fueget diese Lehre bei, and offers me the teaching
Dass ich derselben aenlich sei. that I am like it.
Wenn nun die Pfeife angezuendet When the pipe is lit
So sieht man wie im Augenblick one immediately sees
der Rauch in freien luft verschwundet the smoke dwindling in the air
Nichts als Asche bleibt zurueck nothing but ashes remain
So wird des Menschen Ruhm verzerht in the same way man's fame dissolves
und dessen Leib in Staub verkehrt. and his body turns to dust.
Wie oft gescheht's nicht bei dem Rauchen How often it doesn't happen
Dass wenn der Stopfer nicht zur Hand when, smoking, there is no tamper at
hand
Man pflegt den Finger zu gebrauchen. and one uses his finger
Dann denk' ich, wenn ich mich verbrann' then I think, when I burn myself
O macht die Kohle solche Pein, O when the coals hurt this much
Wie heiss mag erst die Hoelle sein? How hot must then be hell?
Ich kann bei so gestellten Sachen and this way I can
Mir bei dem Toback jederzeit always when smoking
Erbauliche Gedanken machen. have constructive thoughts
Drum schmauch ich voll Zufriedenheit and so I attentively smoke my pipe,
Zu Land, zu Wasser und zu Haus full of contentment,
Mein Pfeifchen stets in Andacht aus on land, at sea and at home.
